Quiet promotion: why a king's second move must wait

Your man has reached the last rank and become a king. You want to use its long move immediately, but it is already the opponent's turn. Quiet promotion differs from promotion inside a capture sequence. We examine an ordinary advance to keep these similar events distinct.

  1. Reach the correct edge first
  2. Pass the turn after a quiet move
  3. Distinguish a quiet arrival from a capture
  4. Exercise: three states of one piece
01

Reach the correct edge first

White's man is on c7 and Black's on h6. White plays c7–b8 and becomes a king. White advances towards the eighth rank; Black towards the first. For example, a black man on b2 can quietly reach a1 or c1 and promote too. Square colour does not change: all belong to the playable diagonal grid.

02

Pass the turn after a quiet move

Promotion has happened on b8, but does not grant two consecutive moves. Black replies h6–g5, its only legal move here. Only now may White's king travel further: b8–g3 along the clear c7, d6, e5, f4 diagonal. The king gains its new abilities immediately but uses them on its next turn. The demonstration shows move order, not a specific endgame plan.

03

Distinguish a quiet arrival from a capture

If a man reaches the last rank during a capture and another capture is available, Russian rules continue the same sequence as a king. A quiet arrival ends the move. Ask “is it a king yet?” separately from “whose turn is it?”. Before advancing, inspect the whole board: if another of your pieces must capture, a clear promotion path does not permit a quiet move instead.

04

Exercise: three states of one piece

Pause before the first step, afterwards, and after Black's reply. Each time name White's piece type and the side to move. Compare this with promotion during a multi-jump sequence. In your own position, swap colours and board direction and find Black's promotion rank unaided. Calculate the reply before promoting: you can gain a king and lose it immediately if its destination gives the opponent a mandatory capture.

Your move now.

Practise the idea on the board. You can make mistakes, try again and start over.
