Russian checkers capture sequences: promotion and beyond

One move can contain several jumps. If a further capture is available after the first, you cannot stop. A man reaching the last rank during a capture immediately becomes a king and continues the sequence under king rules. Calculate the final square in advance.

01

Watch the changing possibilities

A man jumps an adjacent opposing piece to the empty square immediately beyond. A flying king may cross empty diagonal squares to an opponent, jump it and choose an empty square further beyond. Check for another capture after each jump; changing direction is allowed. The same opposing piece cannot be captured twice, and captured pieces remain obstacles until the whole sequence ends.

02

Calculate our route

White's man starts on f6; Black has e7, b6 and h8. First it jumps f6–d8 over e7. On d8 it reaches the last rank and becomes a king. Now another target is visible along d8–c7–b6–a5. The king must continue to a5, capturing b6. The entire f6–d8–a5 sequence is one move; Black does not reply between jumps.

03

Separate intermediate and final squares

Stopping on d8 is illegal because the capture continues. In DUEL, select f6 as the start and a5 as the destination; the engine performs both jumps. One mistake is noticing promotion but missing the new long-range capture. Another is mentally removing captured pieces too soon and inventing a route through them. Check the full route, then compare the remaining material and the final square's safety.

04

From the example to your own combination

Replay the sequence and name the promotion moment. Then open “Two captures in one move” and “Flying king”. Against a bot, look not only for your own sequences but also mandatory captures you can offer the opponent. A sacrifice can open a useful continuation, but calculation must confirm its value. Find every jump before tapping, rather than guessing the destination.
