Pawn promotion: when a knight is more useful than a queen

A pawn reaching the last rank becomes a new piece. A queen is the usual choice, but choosing automatically may hide a tactical opportunity. A knight attacks differently: sometimes its check forces a reply while a second target remains attacked. A small position makes this clear without lengthy calculation.

01

Choose before completing the move

You may choose a queen, rook, bishop or knight of your colour, regardless of which pieces have been captured; a second queen is allowed. You cannot keep a pawn or choose a king. Promotion is part of the same move and the new piece acts immediately. The n suffix in c7c8n means knight, not an extra move after advancing.

02

Spot the two targets from c8

White has king g2 and pawn c7. Black has king e7, queen b6 and pawn h7. After c7–c8 promoting to a knight, it attacks e7 and b6. First this is check. A knight attack cannot be blocked; here Black must move the king. The demonstration chooses e7–d7, then c8–b6 captures the queen with another check.

03

Do not turn the example into a universal rule

The line shows the tactical purpose of choosing a knight, not that it always beats a queen in an ending. Assess all four promotions: is there check, what can the opponent capture, could stalemate occur? Capturing the queen here does not end the game; Black's king and pawn remain. Material success calls for careful play, not an early declaration of victory.

04

Exercise: test every reply to the check

Before advancing, list the squares attacked by the c8 knight. Find other legal black king replies and see whether b6 remains capturable. In this composed position it does after every legal reply to the first check. Then promote to a queen and compare the attacks: a c8 queen does not give the same knight check on e7. Practise checking the new piece's function, rather than memorising one attractive combination.
